Happy Tuesday – That feels like a Monday!!
I have a little story for you all today, It’s not too long, it kind of “stinks”, but ends well 🙂
On Sunday my mom sent me a text asking if I was going to come and pick up my plants that day. We were having them over for dinner that night and I had other things going on in the afternoon, so I said no, I was coming on Monday. She replies – “well, there is this smell in the kitchen and we can’t find it”.
UGH – at that moment I’m thinking, I hate being a landlord lol
I tell her; my sister, niece and I will stop by shortly as we are out shopping and will be in the area. So, we stop over and smell it as soon as we walk in the house. We looked high and low and could not find it. We thought it was a rotten potato. It for sure smelled like something rotting. We smelled the drains. We smelled the pantry. In the closets, any place you can think that food might have gotten and spoiled. The longer we were there, the less it smelled. So we had her light a candle and maybe it was going to be fine.
Monday, we got up and got moving and headed over to pick up the plants. I texted my mom on the way and let her know we were coming. My sister got into the house before my husband and I did and she turns and walks right back out and says it’s bad! Next thing I know, everyone is talking at once saying it’s in the laundry room.
So my husband and I pull out the washer and dryer and take off the access panel and it smells as fresh as can be, We put that all back together and try the attic access in the laundry room. Fresh as can be. We open the laundry room door and get smacked in the face with the worst smell ever. So, we start the process of smelling all the things in the kitchen again. We pulled out the stove and looked behind it. We opened the stove and smelled inside it and there we could start to get a faint smell.
We concluded something got into the oven lining and died. So we took the oven out to the car port and were getting ready to go buy a new stove when my husband decided it would be a good idea to pull the plug off so we didn’t need to buy a new one. When he went to start taking the back off to dissconnect the plug, he found the smell – up close and personal.
There was a lovely dead rat lying on the plug connections in the back of the oven. It was so horrid! Now things are starting to add up in my head. My parents have been complaining about flies in the house for the last two weeks. Big fat flies. I was like – I have no idea where they are coming from…
Now we knew where they were coming from. When hubby got the cover off the back of the stove and he had to lift the dead-decaying rat from it’s resting spot the maggots were falling out of his insides! I don’t know if I can convey in words how GROSS! this all was! I buried the dead creature and hubby finished taking care of the stove. Mom scrubbed the floor under the stove and she texted me last night the stink was now gone. Thank goodness!!!
We went and purchased a new stove for the little house and it will be delivered in 5 to 7 days. Sadly, they are going to have to eat grilled meats and microwaved sides until the new one can be delivered.
On a better note! Our outside kitchen was completed last week Friday and we have been able to grill all weekend!!! It turned out beautifully!
